My beloved Jiu Fen (Feb 2007)

This year's been good. One TV series (Do Not Disturb), two films (Men In White, Gone Shopping) and there's the year-end Hong Kong horror flick, Rule Number One. Fun keeping an exciting future.

After Gone Shopping finished late last month, it's back to my beloved travelling. I did my first overseas gig spinning at Juice (Msia) Mag 5th Birthday Bash with Zack from the Deserters. What a kick! Then it was off to BKK for a break. Followed by the Sarawak Rainforest World Music Fest. My seventh in a row and my last for a while. Let's do something new and different.

Soh Chin been wanting to interview me. I kept telling her I don't think I have done enough to warrant an interview. Perhaps 10 years from now after a more substantial body of work. I think it will be out tomorrow. Good time to update my blog with new mp3s.

I missed Leslie's solo performance at Earshot but thank goodness Nat caught Circling Square on her mp3 recorder. Including this unreleased gem.

Obs' UCC gig was one of the best I've seen them. Here are two songs.

Caracal has typical frenetic energy but there's a bright fuzz about them that I like. So do Superillegals with Biddy in good form last few gigs. However their Homeclub set was rather uneven. Still I love their last song that nite.

Few bands tightrock harder than Lunarin. Monday Sessions' swan-song had them showcasing some new material. Three-months-a-year band Nuance played this fresh piece with new guitarist Alexius (from my beloved Localbarboy).

Plain Sunset reforming is a damn good thing. I so love this new number. The Oddies made a brief comeback when drummer Johnny return from Taipei and had everyone singing along to this classic.

3/4 of 2007 is nearly gone. Keep your future exciting.

Hi Joe, read your interview in the Monday Straits Times Life section that you are an avid film buff, a music fan and a film composer. I just wonder do you watch Chinese movies from Hong Kong like the recent "Hooked on You"? Would you go watch Chinese movies and listen to their film scores like the soon coming movie by Jay Chou? I hope you will answer my questions. Thanks!

Hi anonymous,

I'm a fan of HK serials since young. When I'm not busy I will follow them. My current ones are (I'm bad at titles) the one about women office politics and the other about, something like its hard being a man. About this father and his relationship with his son, in-laws, ex wife. Yes I also follow Chinese cinema. For example I love Lou Ta Yu's score in Johnnie To's Election. Wong Kar Wai uses music very smartly in his film.

I'll only watch the HK drama serials if there are hott chicks in them.

Hey Joe, thanks for the Noise interview. Actually I use Gatsby too haha. Matt wax! Actually I really do wonder what Robert Smith uses. BTW, i probably didn't mention that i was in Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival. Caught Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus, Slint etc. I'll try to post some clips up soon. Yeah, and i also did leave my EP with Sub Pop, Touch and Go, Beggars Banquet and some listener supported radio station. Not that i expect anything heh. Cheers.

Hi Joe
I'm Jaki - i met you long ago when i was working at sbc and you were with one of the record cos. This past Friday, I saw you 3 times in a row - i think you live near me - near peck kio market - and then twice at esplanade - you were right in front of me on the escalator - too freaky - and then i went up to the library and what do i see ? a big pic of you - these days i reckon there aren't any coincidences so i'm wondering if there's some message i'm supposed to get from you :) i was too shy to talk to you directly - sorry about that - hope all is well with you- love the soundtrack to that new kelvin tong movie. cheers jaki
